Love has no labels
by Terry Gee
Being gay, it is sometimes difficult to understand why there is still so much prejudice towards us in the world.
Given a choice, most of us would never have chosen to be gay. A lot of us are outcast by friends and family, shunned by society and in fear of being open with who we really are. This isn’t a choice, we are proud of being gay and who we love has nothing to do with anyone else.
The Ad Council is an American company that has been around for over 70 years. Their mantra is to effect positive social change; whether it be to reduce drink driving, help foster kids find families or just change people’s perceptions of others.
Earlier this year, they released a video entitled Love Has No Labels. A huge X-Ray screen was set up on a stage in front of an audience. When people are behind the screens, all that can be seen are their skeletons. You can’t see skin colour, age, race or even gender. What we see are human beings without the labels.
We sometimes make snap judgements based on what we see and this video is a perfect example of why we need to look further than the surface and accept people for who they are. People are all fundamentally the same and love is love.
