Sam Smith: My album is about a guy I fell in love with
Back in 2009 Bent interviewed a new 16 year-old singer who we thought would be making waves in the future. Sam Smith was that talented young artist and with the release of his debut album “In The Lonely Hour” and his third No1 single, I think we can say that the lad has made it.
In that early chat we happened to comment on his good looks and that we thought he was a bit yummy, to which his reply was: “Am I? I’m constantly surrounded by beautiful people. I’m definitely not aware of my looks. It’s not something I really think about. But I love my body and who I am. I think it is very important to love yourself, otherwise you’re setting yourself up to have a bunch of issues. Then what would I do when they print a less-than-flattering picture in Heat? You have to be comfortable with yourself, otherwise why get into an industry like this?
However, in a recent interview Sam Smith has revealed a little more about his sexuality, saying that his album was inspired when he fell in love with a man. He told The Fader: “In the Lonely Hour is about a guy that I fell in love with last year, and he didn’t love me back. I think I’m over it now, but I was in a very dark place. I kept feeling lonely in the fact that I hadn’t felt love before.”
His fans had noticed that in his video for ‘Leave Your Lover’ there was a definite frisson between the two guys in it that had got them all wondering about his sexuality. (Watch the video )
Sam’s openness doesn’t mean that he intends on being a rallying point for the ‘gay cause’. He says: “I’ve tried to be clever with this album, because it’s also important to me that my music reaches everybody. I’ve made my music so that it could be about anything and everybody – whether it’s a guy, a female or a goat—and everybody can relate to that.”
Back in the 2009 Bent interview we also asked: Are you prepared to be a sex symbol? “If I was to be, I’d be flattered! Can anyone be prepared to be a sex symbol?”
With that incredible voice, the good looks and that ‘best mate down at the pub’ vibe you seem to have… we think you’ve prepared pretty damn well. Can’t wait for the tour.
