LGCM welcomes the announcement from Exodus
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men (or women) to do nothing.” – Edmund Burke (1729-1797)
This statement is so true which is why LGCM has to remain vigilant and constantly challenge the attitudes and beliefs of society.
The Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement (LGCM) welcomes the news that Exodus (an American religious group whose by-line is ‘Exodus International Reaching the World in Grace & Truth’) has realised the error of their ways and has apologised for the damage they have caused by their anti-gay stance over the years. However, rather than simply closing they should now work with the same enthusiasm and dedication to repair some of the damage and encourage other organisations to follow in their footsteps.
The Rev Sharon Ferguson, Chief executive of LGCM said, ‘There are still too many organisations, churches and therapists that are promoting reparative therapy as a cure for homosexuality and subjecting people to many years of anguish and denial. The reality is that reparative therapy tries to convince a person that they are truly a duck and accept that they are an ugly one at that, when in reality they are a beautiful swan. Only when a person accepts who they truly are can they live their life to the fullest and have the abundance of life that Christ promised to us all.’
‘I would like to see Exodus working to bring about positive change by challenging those who continue to promote ‘gay cure’. With all their resources they could stop companies like Google offering ‘gay cure’ Apps or take out adverts in renowned homophobic papers such as the Observer in Jamaica to help counteract the daily propaganda that puts lives at risk.’ she continued.
It is an encouraging step forward towards the eradication of homophobia and transphobia in our world but we still have a long way to go.
