GAY FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT
For some gay footballers the worry about coming out is the main thing that prevents such action. Will their team mates accept them? Will the sponsors support them? Will the fans get on their backs (!!!)? Thankfully, there are no such worries for one group of such sportsmen…
A weekend of drinking and gaiety is set to take place over 16th and 17th March – it’s keenly awaited by everyone, including those who don’t technically qualify but enjoy a good time anyway – that’s right, it’s the Yorkshire Tournament, where around 30 gay-friendly teams converge on Leeds from around the country for Yorkshire Terriers FC’s annual five-a-side competition.
The tournament is one of the most keenly-anticipated events on the gay football calendar and regularly welcomes a couple of hundred visitors to Leeds, which not only helps the local economy but also adds to the vibrancy of this already amazing city.
This year’s edition is extra special following the coming out of former Leeds player Robbie Rogers, which has highlighted the ongoing issues surrounding the relationship being homosexuality and football – he felt that he couldn’t do both, but Yorkshire Terriers – and our fellow teams around the country – are here to offer support, advice, friendship and football to anyone, be they gay, bisexual, curious or even gay-friendly straight men – we are the broadest of churches.
The weekend social starts at 8pm prompt on the Saturday with the all-important tournament draw. The venue this year is the bar, Empire. The address is 24-32 Bridge End. It’s just past Leeds Bridge, LS1 4DJ (opposite the Adelphi pub).
After the draw the night is then yours but please make use of our special offers and promotions across the Leeds venues including free entry into Mission2, and free shots in most bars on the scene.
As always the football starts on the Sunday. The first games kick off at 10.30am so, if you have a thing for hunky guys running around in their shorts… you can watch for FREE.
The venue for the football this year is Goals Soccer Centre. The venue was chosen due to better facilities all round and it is only 5 minutes from Leeds city Centre.
The full address is Redcote Lane, Off Kirkstall Road, Leeds, LS4 2AW.
