Look at the boy with Envy

Jay Jamieson is the youngest member of Envy, a boyband from the north east of England set up as a tribute to Take That and Westlife that is well established, and with critically acclaimed and award winning performances. The band’s vocals have been compared to the tones of Josh Groban, George Benson, and the Drifters. Ryan Houston caught up with Jay to chat about his experiences of music and the band.

How did you first become a performer?

I think I have always known what I wanted to do from a very young age. The idea of performing always seemed like something really interesting to do. Plus, I’ve always wanted to be famous from performing.

What’s it like performing with Envy?

It’s a brilliant opportunity for me, the guys are amazing to work with and the crowds we are able to perform in front of are just brilliant!

What are the best and worst parts about being a performer?

Being on stage; from the moment you walk on to the second you walk off, it’s a feeling you just can’t describe. I just love every moment. I also love all of the fans and friends you make along the way. I guess the worst part would be the crazy fans. I don’t hate it, but it can get a bit too much sometimes with them trying to grope and kiss you!

Do you think that being gay affects your role?

Not really. I get asked about it a lot because I’m on the stage; people seem to think it’s okay to ask me because I’m on stage performing, but they wouldn’t ask a random person.

Who is your inspiration or role model?

I  look up to P!nk a lot, she’s a really amazing figure, because what you see if what you get. She doesn’t have to be like anybody to make it big. Personally, I can’t pick a fault with her, I think she’s what young teens should be looking up to instead of trashier pop stars.

What advice would you give to your 15-year-old self?

Do what feels right in your head. Don’t listen to negativity around you, and be who you want to be. You don’t need to follow the flock to become popular; going your own way will make you a much happier person and a better individual.
