Gay Superhero Marries
Marvel Comics first gay marriage is between longtime X-Man Northstar and his civilian boyfriend, Kyle… and all the excitement of the ceremony is captured in June’s edition of Astonishing X-Men #51… no doubt HELLO magazine is weeping buckets that they didn’t get the exclusive. As it is, with President Obama’s recent support for gay marriage it seems to have spurred the writers into turning the committed relationship… into a fully-fledged wedding. Marvel has always reflected America’s cultural and political developments and , as one of the creative minds behind the story Alex Alonso says: “When gay marriage became legal in New York State, it raised a question, since most of our heroes reside in that state: How would Northstar, the first openly gay character in comics, respond to this new development? Would it change his long-term relationship with his partner, Kyle? Marvel Comics are best when they respond to developments in the real world, and this is just the latest expression of that”.
