EuroGames 2008
Sports men and women galore
EuroGames Barcelona 08 is the greatest LGTB sports event of Europe to be held in the aristocratic city from July 24th to 27th. Most participants are people who belong to the LGTB community (lesbians, gays, transsexuals and bisexuals), though due to its multicultural nature, the event is open to the whole world, regardless of origin and sexual orientation. The number of registrations increases day after day and the organizers of the event are satisfied with the pace of participation.
“To have more than 3000 people registered has resulted in not only matching the forecast, but also surpassing all the expectations”, states the General Director of EuroGames, Miquel Torres.
During the 4 days of the contest, 5,000 sportsmen and women and the presence of more than 30,000 visitors are expected. This will turn Barcelona into the European capital of sports and diversity. Up to now, the most requested disciplines are tennis, badminton, soccer, swimming and volleyball.
EuroGames is a platform of visibility and fight for the equality of people. The sports world is one of the spheres in which prejudices are not broken, being still deeply homophobic. Few professional sportsmen and women dare to be free, since they risk losing advertising contracts or their sports career altogether.
The ultimate goal of EuroGames is to disappear, that is to say, to end, to be unnecessary, and this will happen the day the sports world does not discriminate against lesbians, gays, transsexuals and bisexuals.
