Expectations on big summer blockbusters gets higher and higher every summer as audiences become more familiar with special effects and 3D and what can be achieved. So it’s left to filmmakers to constantly raise the stakes with the story. So with this in mind J. J. Abrams has a lot to live up to in following up his well received Star Trek reboot and he succeeds for the most part.

The sequel brings Spock (Quinto) and Captain Kirk (Pine) back together for some more out of this world bromance as they band together with the Enterprise crew to combat the evil Khan played brilliantly by Brit Benedict Cumberhatch. Unfortunately the sequel feels a little short on meeting expectations – mine anyway –  especially with the news of J.J. Abrams next gig being the Star Wars reboot for Disney.

Sure there are some fantastic set pieces and moments of pure adrenalin – I don’t want to give away any spoilers. However at one point we are teased with the suggestions of an all out war with the Klingons that never happens unfortunately.

I personally love Star Trek when alien life forms are involved but here we have a very human story set on the Enterprise which is fine and still greatly satisfies the appetite for popcorn and candy and provides a visual feast. But if you contrast this to the film’s incredible opening sequence where the Enterprise rescues a planet from certain extinction by putting out a volcano and you will understand where I am coming from.

Don’t get me wrong though, this is still worth the price of the 3D upgrade at the cinema and is thoroughly enjoyable thrill ride. The script does a great job of providing so many memorable characters including Bones Urban), Scott (Pegg) and Checkov (Yelchin). Plus Hollywood hunk Chris Pine is dreamy to look at with his beautiful blue eyes and rugged masculinity. So yeah be sure to check this out at a cinema near you.
